Volunteer

Become a member of the FCE community.

When you work directly with students enrolled in FCE, you are not only sharing academic and life-planning skills, you’re serving as a role model. Your own experiences – college, career, books you’ve read, places you’ve lived – can open new horizons for students just starting to explore the world. Through your example, our students can see that a college education is indeed a viable option. Become a senior advisor, academic tutor, or mentor.

Thank you for your interest in FCE!

Tutoring means helping kids have what I had when I was growing up – instruction, direction, and support. Tutoring means making an impact and having fun at the same time.

Senior Advisor

The Senior Advisor serves as support for a small group of students engaged in the college admission process. Advisors help students identify good-fit colleges, develop compelling applications. They also lend moral support as students work toward their goal of attending college.

Commitment: 5-8 hours a month for six months, plus required attendance at monthly student/parent meetings

Academic Tutors

Tutor students – individually or in groups – and give them that extra push to get through a challenging assignment or prepare for a test.  You can have an impact as a:

Group Tutor – provide general academic assistance and homework help to small groups of students on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 – 8 p.m. for high school students; and on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 – 6 p.m. for middle school students.

Commitment: 2 hours per week

Individual Tutor: Provide academic assistance in specific subject areas, while helping our students hone their basic skills, study habits, and self-confidence. Individual tutors work with an assigned student once or twice a week depending on the student’s and tutor’s schedules.

Commitment: 2-3 hours a week

Mentors

Share your academic and life experiences with a student enrolled in FCE’s high school College Bound Program. Serve as a role model for a student beginning his or her journey to college. Introduce your mentee to the Bay Area’s rich culture, exciting technology and natural beauty. ·

Commitment: 1 hour per week
