History
Foundation for a College Education (FCE) was established to promote
college access for students who have traditionally been
underrepresented in higher education. Aware of how few students of
color they were serving through their for-profit college counseling
company, Glenn Singleton and Chris Roe recognized the need to create an
alternative for families who could not afford costly college planning
services.
They founded FCE in 1995 and began by working with students and
families at Woodside High School and other community agencies. In 1997,
FCE established a formal collaboration with the Palo Alto Unified
School District Voluntary Transfer Program, a court-ordered
desegregation program that lets families in East Palo Alto send their
children to school in Palo Alto.
Our Community
FCE works towards closing the college-going gap in East Palo Alto and
the surrounding areas. Only 11% of East Palo Alto residents hold a
bachelor's degree or higher, and FCE is attempting to change this
statistic. Our students are promising youth of color who typically are
from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, are first in their families to
attend college, and have limited exposure to higher education.
Currently, close to 200 students and parents of African American,
Latino, and Pacific Islander descent participate in our programs
annually.
